I have been longing for a beach vacation for months now. Unfortunately, my work schedule has been crazy lately so I haven’t been able to book a getaway. Old man winter has had his claws in the Dallas/ Fort Worth metroplex for what seems like an eternity. Luckily, I was able to get a mini reprieve from the arctic temperatures outdoors at Epic Waters, a state of the art indoor water park located in Grand Prairie, Texas!
When I entered Epic Waters, it was like walking into a tropical oasis equipped with tons of fun. Epic Waters has a delightful climate of 85 degrees year round making it the perfect escape from Jack Frost, Frostbite, and all his Frosty homeboys!
Epic Waters features the Rio Grand, a lazy river for people like me who just want to chill in the water and float at a leisurely pace. There are also several exhilarating waterslides at Epic Waters. Thill seekers who crave a pure adrenaline rush should definitely try the LassoLoop, a water slide that will send riders gliding at a 45 degree angle through a myriad of twists and turns before making a splash.
There is a FlowRider simulator for guests who like surfing or stand-up paddling. It was so cool to watch people surf the waves. Some of the surfers were amazing! You would think they were native Californians. It looked super fun. I was tempted to try it but I did not. Your girl knows her limits. I have a problem staying upright on dry land. Add a surfboard and choppy waves to the equation and that’s a guaranteed recipe for disaster. I was definitely not trying to become the next internet meme.
After people watching for a bit, I decided it was time for a lunch break. Epic Waters has private cabanas with table service, a full service bar, and concession stand for dining. I enjoyed a basic chili dog with french fries and a flaky churro during my visit.
Epic Waters recommends their signature Epic Dog, a gourmet hotdog with everything but the kitchen sink. It is topped with onions, jalapeños, cheddar cheese, pulled pork and chili cheese Fritos. It sounded like a very interesting creation. The prices for food were very reasonable for a waterpark.
Before I ended my fun packed day, I visited the arcade. My friend and I played basketball and a few other games before we finally got dressed in our scarves and coats to return to the reality of 30 degree weather outside. The feeling of summer was fun while it lasted.
Overall, I had a blast spending a few hours at the waterpark. I can’t wait to return to Epic Waters during the summer. They will be unveiling the brand new wave pool in May 2019! I would highly recommend making the trek to Grand Prairie if you have any plans to visit the Dallas Fort Worth area in the future.
Here are a few things to consider before your first visit to Epic Waters.
- I would definitely recommend visiting during a week to avoid the crowds. Epic Waters is open year round, including major holidays, thanks to a retractable roof and climate-controlled interior. I went during the weekend and it was super crowded. This caused longer lines and wait times. There were a lot of birthday parties happening during this time as well.
- Sometimes Groupon features discounted tickets for the waterpark. Check there before purchasing your tickets on site.
- Remember to bring a towel because they are not provided. If you forget, there is a Walmart close by and they also sell some in the retail shop on site. I also recommend wearing shoes designed for slippery surfaces to avoid injuries.
- Lockers are available for a fee.
- Life jackets and inner tubes are provided for free which is very nice. Most waterparks charge for these items.
- No BYOB here folks. Outside food or drinks are not permitted.
- If you have a friend or loved one who is not really into waterparks, they should totally check out the Epic!
The Epic is an arts and recreation center located next door to Epic Waters. It houses a basketball court, indoor track, aquatic center, recording studio, internet radio station, digital library, IKEA culinary kitchen, a theater, and more. Day passes to this facility are only $10. It also has a super cute cafe that is open to the public. There is something fun to accommodate everyone.
