Living Now for a Legacy Later

Today is dedicated to remembering  the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It’s a day that we take the time to celebrate one of the greatest humanitarians of the past. As I was reflecting on Dr. King’s legacy, I started to wonder what my legacy would be after I passed away. Let me just tell you…I couldn’t think of one thing worthy of a legacy. Sure I’m a great friend, family member, and a pretty decent nursing instructor but I long for something more. I want to be a true life changer like Dr. King was. I want to look back over my life when I get old and gray (God willing) and say I accomplished what I was sent here for. More than anything I want to make an impact on the world but first I want to impact my community. Am I having delusions of grandeur here?

I have heard various motivational speakers say if your identify your passion, it will lead you to your purpose. I am passionate about so many things! One of the main things I am passionate about is helping people! As I get older, it really bothers me to see homeless people, orphaned/ impoverished children, and elderly people in need. I always want to help and usually do so by supporting organizations financially. I would like to start actually volunteering with organizations dedicated to helping these populations. 2014 has already started as an enlightening year for me. I have nicknamed it the “Year of Transformation.”

Today I want to challenge you to reflect on your own lives. What will your legacy be? Is it one you would be proud of? Can you do more to impact your community, your country, the world? Make a plan and put it into action. As long as you are alive, there is still time left to make a difference.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?”

“An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.”

“Everybody can be great…because anybody can serve. You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”

“If I cannot do great things, I can do small things in a great way.”

This is a great thought provoking post! I struggle with what legacy I want to leave behind, but all I can hope for is that people remember me as a kind, loving, and helpful person. If that’s how I’m remembered I’ll be happy.
