5 Ways to Kill the Road Trip Vibe

I love road trips. I prefer riding in a car or driving to any other form of transportation. I enjoy passing through small towns, stopping at roadside attractions, eating fattening snacks (just keeping it real), listening to music and singing off key to my favorite old school songs. You can’t do that on a train, plane, or a bus without disturbing the other passengers. Although I enjoy road trips, there are a number of things that can instantly kill the excitement of a road trip straightaway! Here are my top five road trip vibe killers:

road trip

  1. Excessive cell phone chatter. My husband and I went on a trip to Dallas recently and I was ready to toss his cell phone out of the window. That bloody phone rang from the time we left Houston until the time we checked into our hotel in Dallas. I guess that is one of the disadvantages to being married to a business man who always seems to have the answers to everyone’s pressing questions. Please don’t kill the vibe by talking on the phone. Enjoy your time with the ones you’re with. Tell funny stories, catch up on life, resort to simpler times when you actually enjoyed socializing with people in person. Do y’all remember a time when Facebook and Twitter didn’t exist? As a matter of fact, resolve to use your phone only in case of emergency.
  2. Messing with the music: This goes hand in hand with number 1. No one wants to mute the music so that you can take a phone call. Unless its an emergency, ignore the call. Sing along to all the fun songs with the rest of the car mates. Even worse don’t complain about the music. I think that the music selection should automatically default to the driver’s choice  since they are the ones who need to stay alert behind the wheel. Upbeat playlists are always ideal for long road trips.
  3. Too many pit stops: Word of advice…if you know your bladder is the size of an egg, do NOT drink a 2 liter soda during the ride so that the driver keeps having to stop at a rest stop or gas station every 20 miles for you to go to the restroom. This delays arrival to the final destination and is just super annoying and inconvenient. Children and old people are an exception. Being ill is another exception. If you are a healthy adult, then NO. Get your bladder in check and stop drinking like a fish!
  4. Having the misfortune of traveling with an incompetent GPS or Google Maps!: I can not begin to count the number of times that I have had to figure out where the heck I was because my GPS dropped me off in a sketchy neighborhood. I am really beginning to think that someone at Google was having a bad day and just put the wrong satellite coordinates into the system for various destinations just to mess with people. If I hear the word rerouting repeatedly when trying to locate a place I already know I’m in trouble. Getting lost is definitely a road trip vibe killer and a waste of precious time if you are on a tight schedule.
  5. Sleeping the entire trip: If someone invites you on a road trip it means that they REALLY enjoy your company. They are willing to be stuck in a vehicle with you for numerous hours. Let’s be real there are some people in your life that you would dare not invite on a road trip. So do your friend or family member a favor and don’t sleep the entire trip leaving them to drive with the music at a whisper or bored to death while driving through the desert or countryside. Naps are ok but at some point wake up!

I absolutely hate it when my husband falls asleep on a road trip! He’ll sleep for hoooouuuurrrrrrssss!!! But I will say this much: I do not listen to music at a whisper when he’s asleep! Should I suffer in boredom and silence because you’re asleep for five hours? I think not! In my road trip rule book, the driver controls the radio!

I think the radio control rule should be a law lol! I wish I could sleep for hours when traveling but I never can. Every pothole wakes me up and if we have to slam on brakes for any reason I am up for the rest of the journey. My husband could sleep through a hurricane!

    You’re so right!
It was funny to read this, as my husband went on a road trip as our first real “date”
We drove from Houston to Cleveland in ONE WEEKEND!!!! I figured this would be a surefire way to know whether or not we were compatible! Aaaand here we are 7 years later!!!
    I’ve always loved road trips!

That sounds like fun but I don’t know if I could do that. Thank goodness he turned out to be awesome! Could you imagine being stuck with a crazy person for hours on end? I would probably be like just drop me off at the nearest Amtrak station lol.

LOLOL This is soo funny. I love road trips too, and I really hate if I’m the driver someone goes, oh can you turn down the music I have to take this call. Ok I can do that for a few minutes. Everyone has matters to attend too. But if song after song is going by and you are still on the phone and we can’t even talk to each other (if multiple people are on the trip) because you are STILL on the phone, then I’m going to be annoyed!

Haha thank you! That annoys me too. I would start giving that person the side eye like will you hurry up and freakin wrap this call up?! I find myself doing that to my mom and husband all the time.

LOL! Girl now you are going to have to get some coffee or an energy drink on your next road trip to stay awake! You’re missing out on the fun 🙂

Ah man I haven’t been on a road trip for soooo long! It’s probably because I’m a sleeper … nobody invites me back! Lol

#2 and #4 for my pet-peeves… Especially the GPS… I mean… what’s the point of having one if it’s going to “lose satellite” in the desert or especially during cloudy days… So much for technology….
